Sunny Ruckus
By Angie Durbin
Painted on a sunny day at Union Square, NYC, and I think it shows. It was 2021, the pandemic lockdown had lifted, and this was one of my first times venturing back out into Manhattan. It was teaming with the energy of people, and I realized how much I missed that.
It’s scratchier and more textured than my usual flourished marks, with a lot of spontaneous, optimistic energy that I think reflects the mood.
Months later I was flipping through the book and realized there was a resemblance to a quirky figurine I had on my windowsill, sort of mimicking the black horizontal stripes and whimsical feel.
There's a tall striped tower running through the middle that reminds me of a little figurine I have at home that I named Felix, which means "happy" in Latin, and it fits. What do you see?
