Blackletter calligraphy originated in Germany in the 12th century. It is characterized by its thick, heavy strokes and angular letterforms. Blackletter calligraphy was used extensively in the Middle Ages for writing books, manuscripts, and legal documents.

Materials and tools: All materials are provided including a Calligraphy pen, instructional handouts, practice paper, and personalized gift name tag.

Fundamental strokes: We will cover the fundamental strokes used in blackletter calligraphy, such as the downstroke, the upstroke, and the diagonal stroke.

Letterforms: You'll learn and practice the specific structure of blackletter calligraphy letters.

Spacing and composition: How to space and compose your letters to create a balanced and striking piece of calligraphy.

Practice and feedback: Students will have the opportunity to practice their new blackletter calligraphy skills with feedback from the instructor so you have tools and techniques to continue learning and improving.
Originally used for manuscript books and documents almost 3,000 years ago, blackletter calligraphy still remains relevant, dramatic, expressive, and authoritative.

Do I need any art experience to take the Blackletter Calligraphy workshop?Absolutely not! It can be overwhelming and frustrating to try calligraphy on your own. This workshop provides a welcoming space with hands-on instruction and feedback from the instructor.
