Room view: An abstract gestural painting with organic watercolor shapes and layers of curving black brushmarks, displayed as a wall art print above a minimalist gray chair and a cabinet holding a fish tank in a contemporary living room with neutral colors. Art by Angie Durbin.

Squidoo

By Angie Durbin

This was painted on an airplane along with 2 other artworks during a 4-ish hour flight from New York to Denver to visit my brother and his family.

I just love painting on airplanes because it’s a completely different setting, with different people around and constraints on how much space you have to paint. It’s also great because your mind is clearer and not distracted by the daily chores that are always lingering at home.

It was early fall, and in that moment I felt at bliss—going to see my brother, clear skies, time off from work, headphones, nestled into my little seat, and just painting away by the window. The song “Sonnentaz” was on repeat almost through the whole flight, the vibe just hit right. The exact date of when I made the painting is encrypted in the composition, can you find it? (Spoiler below!)

I used my smaller travel watercolor kit that easily fit on the little tray table, a cartridge water brush, black markers, and a pad of high-quality watercolor paper, which I keep in the front of my backpack for easy access.

Something about the organic shapes flowing around felt like bubbles, water plants, and cute sea creatures, so I named it Squidoo. What do you see?
