Shapeshifter
By Angie Durbin
This painting began as a mess of random colors. I added some black marks and then kept adding white to quiet the noise and zero in on the areas that interested me most. A sort of four-eyed face appeared, and I refined it further with rounded textures and small line gestures.
When it felt finished, I rotated it again and again to decide which side should be the top. I landed on the one I liked best in the moment, but any of the rotations could work, and each one gives off a different identity and energy, which is why I named it 'Shapeshifter.'
I see it as a symbol of freedom and possibility. We aren’t bound by our past or limited by our circumstances, and we can reinvent how we show up. Nothing about it is fixed, and that’s the point.
You can hang it in any of four orientations. The expression and elements change moods according to which one suits you in the moment.
