Room view: A fluid abstract gestural painting with swirling brush marks and soft watercolors displayed as a wall art print in a sage-green arch next to a blue armchair, hanging chili string, and table with coffee and a watercolor kit. New Mexico Magic, by Angie Durbin.

New Mexico Magic

By Angie Durbin

This watercolor abstract was painted on a serene Saturday morning in Taos, New Mexico where I loved to go for long weekend mini-vacations. I let the watercolor flow freely, listening to my favorite music and enjoying a big cup of strong black coffee.

At the time I lived in Manitou Springs, Colorado which made it a fairly quick 4-hour drive through the expansive mesas, crisp air, and surrounding mountains.

There’s something about the ancient mystical and magical energy in New Mexico that I’ve always loved and felt connected to.

This was a different style than I was painting at the time and liked the gestural simplicity of it, so I ended up getting a tattoo on my left lower leg, and that experience wasn't quite as peaceful. :)

With the loose watercolor style and light washes, the tattoo artist (Westside Tattoo, Colorado Springs) made an outline of the more defined areas for the transfer, and then free-styled the colors by looking at the painting. I love that it’s not an “exact” replica, but rather a slightly different version from another artist’s style and interpretation.
