Room view: Abstract painting ‘Abracadabra’ by Angie Durbin, featuring vibrant colors and black brush marks, displayed as a wall art print above a dark console table in a bright modern living room.

Abracadabra

By Angie Durbin

This artwork ended up with dense color layers and overlapping little visual characters, with song lyrics jotted around of what I was listening to and random phrases scribbled around.

I saw so much movement in the energy with little creatures that had formed, from a weird little dog and swimming fish to a rocket launch and a quirky face that needed a little assistance.

I just had to make an animated video to bring them to life. It was so fun to do and seemed kind of magical when I could make them move around, which is why I titled the piece "Abracadabra."

The main song I listened to was “In the Waiting Line” by Zero 7, and you’ll find tiny lyrics from that song sprinkled around. Towards the end I switched to Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do” song, which you can see in a small spot at the top, although it actually looks like “DOID” written a couple of times. The random swear words? Just because they’re fun and irreverent.
